A small oil on canvas by Swedish artist Nisse Zetterberg, dated 1948 and monogram signed. The frame, carved by Zetterberg himself, is heavy and textured, with deep relief patterns and visible, characterful wear.
Zetterberg worked mainly in the 1940s and 50s, known for still lifes and modest modernist compositions. This is a rare example of Zetterberg’s work where both the painting and the frame were made by his hand. Few of his still lifes survive in their original sculpted frames, which were typically reserved for personal or exhibition pieces.
We really enjoy the tactility and character of this painting. Combined with the heavy, carved frame, the piece has an almost devotional quality. A sculptural object as much as it is a painting.
