A sculptural teapot by Estonian artist Urmas Puhkan, dated 1991, formed primarily in unglazed porcelain.
A seated female figure becomes the vessel itself, resting on a low, cushion-like base, with the spout projecting forward and the handle looping behind. It reads somewhere between a teapot and a small, slightly surreal figure, her function not really being the main point of her attraction…
The surface is incised with repeated linear patterning, with blue pigment worked into the lines. The head lifts as a lid. The hair, finished in a dark glaze, feels more animated than the rest of the piece, tipping it further into something characterful rather than purely decorative.
There is a manufacturing crack to the underside, and some of the hair tendrils have snapped and been partially restored.
Signed and dated 1991.
Height: approx. 35 cm
Width: approx. 33 cm
Depth: approx. 21 cm
