A 1930s table by Tolix with a particularly good history of colour. Founded by Xavier Pauchard in Burgundy in 1927, Tolix became synonymous with French industrial furniture, producing steel pieces for cafés, factories and public spaces. Its red-painted tubular steel base supports a folded steel top, darkened almost to black through decades of use.
Earlier layers of red and vivid green reappear around the edges and in scattered patches across the top, alongside areas of exposed metal. Scratches, rubbed edges and overlapping paint give the surface a depth we always search for when sourcing our pieces, with different colours becoming visible depending on the light.
The narrow proportions and crossed supports keep the frame light beneath the heavily worked top. Shown here with four red Tolix metal chairs, available separately.
