Yellow Swedish Handwoven Runner 1920s/30s
This Swedish runner, or ripsmattor, was handwoven in the 1920s or '30s during the emergence of Scandinavian modernism - when clean geometry replaced Victorian ornament.
Ripsmattor (literally "rep weave rugs") are prized for their distinctive ribbed texture, created by alternating thick and thin weft threads. Woven on narrow looms for hallways and kitchens, they balanced durability with understated beauty - the essence of Swedish design between the wars.
This piece features an unusual colourway: one side in vibrant egg yolk yellow, the other in softer pastel yellow. Age-related wear adds to its unique character, while the meticulous handwork remains visible in every balanced band and textured surface. Practical, composed, and quietly elegant.
Potential to make into two rugs due to its rare, long length.
Length 524 cm, Width 60 cm.
Collection from Brixton, London or arranged delivery
