‘Why Not’ get this generous lounge chair designed by Hans Hopfer for Molinari? Upholstered entirely in red leather that has deepened and mellowed beautifully with age.
The chair is built around a simple, enveloping form: broad curved arms, a deep seat and two loose cushions that seem to collapse into one another, inviting the sitter to do much the same. It is, without question, one of the most comfortable armchairs we have sat in. Our showroom won’t be the same, or nearly as comfortable, without it.
Age has brought remarkable variation to the leather, the tomato red shifting through burnt orange, tobacco, rust and deeper red-brown, with creases and tonal changes giving it further depth. The original wooden feet have been painted black, allowing them to recede beneath the chair and leaving its generous leather form to do the work.
Much like a favourite pair of shoes, the leather has been carefully treated and conditioned, while remaining beautifully worn in and ready for many more years of use.

About the designer
German-born Hans Hopfer (1931–2009) began his career as an artist and sculptor before turning to furniture design, bringing with him an unconventional approach to how furniture could be lived with. His interest in informal, low-slung seating is perhaps best known through his ‘Mah Jong’ sofa for Roche Bobois, and the same invitation to sit rather than perch is pretty evident here.
