A set of six chairs by Tolix dating from the 1950s, made from tubular and pressed steel and finished in a strong pillar-box red. Founded by Xavier Pauchard in Burgundy in 1927, Tolix produced furniture for cafés, factories and public spaces, designed to be hard-wearing, lightweight and easily stacked.
The construction is particularly economical: continuous tubular frames form the legs and sides, with curved steel slats making up the seat and two broad bands across the back. Their ability to stack tightly is built directly into the shape.
The original red finish carries scratches, chips and small areas of exposed metal from use, while remaining remarkably vivid across the set.
They work particularly well with our 1930s Tolix table, where the red of the chairs picks up the earlier layers of paint visible beneath its darkened top. The table is available separately.
