Red and Green Swedish Handwoven Runner 1900s

£540.00
sold out

This Swedish runner, or ripsmattor, was handwoven in the very early 1900’s during the emergence of Scandinavian modernism — when clean geometry replaced Victorian ornament.

Ripsmattor (literally "rep weave rugs") are prized for their distinctive ribbed texture, created by alternating thick and thin weft threads. Woven on narrow looms for hallways and kitchens, they balanced durability with understated beauty — the essence of Swedish design between the wars.

This piece features another unusual colourway: one side in bright reddish pink, the other a vibrant pastel green. Age-related wear adds to its unique character, while the meticulous handwork remains visible in every balanced band and textured surface. Practical, composed, and quietly elegant.

Potential to make into two (even three) rugs due to its rare, long length. Seen here folded as an alternative to permanently shortening. The image of the yellow rug demonstrates its actual length.

Length 444cm Width 59cm
