Indonesian Folk Art Animal Bench, mid-20th century

£320.00

A hand-carved Indonesian folk-art bench in the form of a striped animal (we think it’s likely a cat). The ambiguity of the animal is part of its appeal. Cat-like in the face, zebra-like in its markings, it sits somewhere between furniture, creature and sculpture. While rooted in Indonesian folk tradition, its abstraction places it in an unexpectedly similar conversation to the animal sculptures of Gérard Rigot.

The painted surface has worn back over time, leaving fragments of black, white and pale blue across the timber. We particularly love the last red fragment of the mouth and his sweet fawning expression.

The extensive wear, together with the slightly uneven stance, means it is best appreciated as a sculptural object or display piece rather than functional seating.

Dimensions: 101 × 17 x 47 cm

Collection from Brixton, London or arranged delivery.
