Glasgow Style Mirror in the Manner of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, circa 1900

£480.00

A Glasgow Style mirror in worked metal, circa 1900.

The design closely follows the language of Charles Rennie Mackintosh – or his immediate circle – with its balance of strict geometry and stylised, symbolic ornament. The pressed motifs at the top and base echo the Glasgow School’s characteristic approach, where organic forms are flattened and disciplined into a graphic, architectural rhythm.

Constructed from joined metal panels, the surface is lightly worked, giving a soft, uneven reflectivity. Vertical line detailing at the sides reinforces the linear structure, a key aspect of Mackintosh’s work, where decoration is contained rather than allowed to spread.

The metal has a dark, aged patina with light wear. The mirror plate is later.

A restrained but expressive example of the Glasgow movement, at the point where Art Nouveau gives way to early modernism.

Height 33 cm
Width 25.4 cm
