A sculptural table lamp made from an early 20th-century French wooden screw clamp, likely once used in a joiner’s workshop for pressing or holding timber.
Part of Altar Pieces, an ongoing series reworking historical objects into new contexts.
The original form is left largely intact – a heavy, architectural construction of layered hardwood blocks, centred on a large wooden screw thread. The mechanism remains fully legible, giving the piece its vertical tension and rhythm.
There’s a real richness to the timber, with tonal shifts across the different elements – warmer, honeyed blocks set against deeper, more worn sections. Evidence of age runs throughout: small wormholes, surface markings and tool wear that soften what is otherwise a quietly brutalist silhouette.
Raised slightly on small feet, the base has a subtle lift that offsets its weight, creating a nice tension between mass and balance.
Rewired and PAT tested, ready for use.
