A mysterious painting on metal, held within a heavily carved wooden frame of scrolling leaves and flowers, two separate objects of devotion presented as a single work. The frame appears to predate the painting itself, its near-black surface worn at the highest points to reveal small flashes of the timber beneath.
The figure kneels beneath a cross, hands clasped in prayer and face turned upwards, emerging from a background of deep umber, rust and red. The darkness of the painting continues almost uninterrupted into the carved frame, giving the whole piece a sacred, object-like presence.
Its maker and precise age remain unknown. The painting has recently undergone restoration preserving the existing surface.
