An enigmatic, almost talismanic early nineteenth-century Swedish bureau, retaining its original black painted finish, softened by generations of use.
The black paint has worn back along the edges, corners and handles to reveal the warm timber beneath. The fall-front opens to an unpainted timber interior, its surface scattered with old ink stains from its original users. Together, the rubbed paint, exposed timber and ink marks animate the bureau with the traces of countless hands and lives. So imbued with their energy, it virtually vibrates.
