An Arts & Crafts carved chair, late 19th century, worked in softwood, likely pine, with small inlaid semi-precious stones set into the frame. Recently reupholstered in pink moiré, bringing out the pink coral stones set within the carving.
The surface is tightly worked throughout – repeated notches, cuts and faceted details running across the uprights and rails. The stones are set directly into the carving, restored where missing to match the originals.
The timber has taken on an ashen tone over time, now lifted by a waxed finish. Pegged joints remain visible, and the H-stretcher anchors the form.
Compellingly unusual, shaped by the Arts & Crafts belief in the handmade, if a chair had any claim to magic, it’s this one.
