This cabinet is a strong example of Swedish allmoge furniture – the painted folk tradition of rural communities. Dating from the 1700s, it is hand-painted in deep blue with contrasting red-orange mouldings and bold diamond motifs, a graphic language typical of vernacular Scandinavian interiors.
Original forged iron hardware remains throughout, including the keyhole escutcheon and hand-wrought hinges, alongside a simple wooden peg used as the door closure. One hinge has been repaired with a bent nail, which is our favourite part.
Layers of worn paint reflect long use rather than later decoration, giving the cabinet a direct, unpolished presence with a clear folkloric character.
Height 104 cm
Width approx. 66 cm
Depth approx. 40 cm
Collection from Brixton, London, or delivery can be arranged.
